Tank Case by Case-mate for iPhone 4S

The Tank Case is an exceptionally rugged case for your iPhone 4/4S. While it provides very good protection from sand, dust, wind, and rain, it really shows its pedigree with the protection it provides from drops.

As the name implies, the Tank Case is designed to be tough, and it is. Although I have always liked the feel of silicone iphone 4 covers, I have never liked how they gather lint in my pocket nor turn them inside-out when removed. Further, in time, these silicone skins always stretch out, rendering the case obsolete long before the polycarbonate portion is compromised. Thankfully, Case-mate has broken tradition here by putting the silicone on the inside of the case. If you stop to think about it, this makes perfect sense. After all, how many motorcycle helmets do you see with the soft foam on the outside? This design provides a great deal of protection while at the same time eliminates the problems of stretch-out silicone and inside-out pockets.

The Tank Case is a thoughtfully designed, extremely rugged case for the iPhone 4/4S. It successfully walks the thin line between protection and accessibility, compromising appropriately in each category in order to provide what I consider to be ideal levels in both. A high quality holster rounds out the package, making it an exceptional value for anybody who needs this level of protection.

Some personal views about the iphone battery

There are loads of battery boosting cases on the market for the iPhone 4 and 4S, but few come in at the price point of the Energizer. In fact, for only a little more than a pretty ordinary silicone case you can pretty much double the battery life of your iPhone. I tested this product on a 4S running iOS 5.0.1 - and in fact I think I have managed a little over twice the battery life. So, you can be assured that it does what it says on the tin.

The energiser does add a little bulk to you phone, just over half a cm at the deepest part of the back cover, and about 1cm in length. This isn't too much in comparison to other, similar cases, and given the svelt styling of the iPhone itself, it doesn't feel as much as it looks on paper. Less easy to live with, however, is the additional weight - my iPhone is now a bit too hefty for my inside jacket pocket, for example.

In terms of looks and protection capabilities, the Energizer is pretty decent. It's a nice compromise of hard plastic and silicone, leaves all the switches and ports accessible (I will come back to that.....), and looks generally nice in a Matt black finish. It has discreet LED lights to the rear which indicate battery charge for the case, and a rubberised button to switch the power transfer on.

There are a few niggles, though. For one, the case replaces the dock connector with a micro USB - not the end of the world as it charges as quickly and can by sync'ed with no problem - but you'll need to take the phone out of the case to use any hardware that relies on dock connector technology. There is also a small issue with the styling - at the base of the iPhone, where it docks with the battery pack, there is a small lip that helps to keep the phone snug. However, the lip falls away to the right and left in a sort of designer curve - which would be fine if it didn't expose the iPhone's silver bottom rim for just a cm or so on either side. This rather spoils the finish - in fact it looks a little unfinished. Finally, I don't much like the silicone coating on the back - it is prone to sweating in your hand, so it's impossible to use the phone in its case without leaving wet finger marks.

Those gripes aside this is a very effective, relatively good looking battery case for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. And I can't grumble too much give the sub-forty-quid price tag. I can see myself continuing to use this for my work phone as I use it a lot and need the extra battery oomph

This year at CES, Targus debuted some nice products. We were able to experience some of these products, and thought you’d like to check them out as well.

The SpinPad was the first product we got to see. It has a hard shell design with a built in stand that works with the iPad 2. You can hang it, swivel it, or just hold it with your hand — it acts as a mount for the iPad 2. The SpinPad will be released in about two weeks and sells for $59.

Next up, the Versaview. This product isn’t new, but now comes in more colors. It is a keyboard case and stand for the iPad 2. There is a hole in the case, allowing you to showcase the Apple logo on your device, and it also lets you flip the case around and use it in portrait mode to type. It’s microsuede on the inside, and pleather on the outside and comes in two colors: a white/blue and a black, with more colors coming soon. The Versaview with keyboard is $99, and $49 without the keyboard.

The last product shown to us by Targus was the iNotebook: a leather folio case that measures 8.5-by-11 inches. It works via Bluetooth; you utilize a special pen to write on a notepad which then transfers your writing to the iPad. The app that does this is absolutely free. You can even organize the documents and store them. This is currently in the prototype phase, so we’re sure the design will change from the product we saw yesterday, becoming a bit more polished. The iNotebook will be debuting in July, and will cost $149. This will be great for students going back to school, and also artists.

That’s it for Targus at the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show!
